Well the theory is, if it's cut constantly, they just compost down into the lawn. I've got a "ninja" blade for my mower, which works really well if you're manic about your lawn and cut it all the time, but you're stuffed if the grass is a bit longer than usual.
Ah, cheers...

Robot mowers only need to go as fast as the grass grows. When they have finished on cut, it should be time for the next. Do they go faster in real life?

Wrong? up and down, up and down, up and down etc etc etc
How can I be doing that wrong? Therapy it ain't.
It's when you have to cut across a slope that the whole thing goes tits up. The blades dig in and the stones start flying, gouges of earth everywhere. It's all pretty bloody really.

Mort, there's a house on one of my rides with a robot mower and a very, very large lawn, sloping down on three sides to ditches full of water. The mower shimmies over the grass seemingly at random, turning whenever it feels like it. I have no idea how it avoids falling into the ditches, there's no fence, hedge, guide wires or such, but the grass is always nice and short, consistently no bald patches and no tufty bits. Not as smart as @Dave 123's above but nicer than my hand-mown patch.

My wife has a robot mower. She says, 'The grass could do with mowing and it's not raining!' and an hour later it's done. Magic.

We've got a robot vacuum cleaner and whilst that would be rubbish for mowing a lawn the point is it does actually work at vacuuming stuff in the house so no reason why a robot mower wouldn't work. Unless they're shït.
