St Etienne are a national treasure. But they are deliberately anachronistic and living in their own knowing world of electronica plus perfect 60s pop, so they were almost designed to be underrated except by those who 'get it'. It's unpopular pop music, or pop music for elitists.

hhm, they've always struck me as a band designed by music journalists for the sole delectation of music journalists. They are by some margin the worst band I've ever seen live - Sarah Cracknell simply can't sing. I guess I've just never "got it".

When did you see them? For me she's got a lot better since the early days (I've probably seen them more than any other band, also they're kind of friends of friends.). Their Xmas gig at the palladium a few years ago was amazing, also the gig in Bloomsbury ballroom where they did all of fox base alpha.

I wouldn't call Peter and bob journos either, they were more fanzine writers who messed about with music and struck gold (nothing can stop us is a glorious pop moment)

I think it must have been around the time Tiger Bay was released (94/5ish, I guess). I can see (hear) that it's all quite clever, but I just can't engage with them.

The Boy Gedge
Blue Aeroplanes
Kirk Brandon, in particular Theatre of Hate

And lost badly too

Awesome live, seen them three times, if you get chance go and enjoy.
Though I hate the Brit Awards because it is pure selling as an industry show piece,I recall this as the best performance in the show's history!

Oh and I've seen that bloke in the coat about a bit too!
The crowd cannot take it in, they were expecting Robbie Williams.
