I was asked about this but don't have a clue. Is there anything stopping me from using a 10sp cassette + chain with an MTB crankset? I have a feeling if this works it's problem solved but I've not played about with stuff like this before.

The bike on which it is to be fitted would help ie a road bike or MTB and whether Shimano, Campag or other? Type of bottom bracket and what the rear hub is? Also deraillieur front whether braize on or band clamp which will need to be adjusted or changed and rear as well length of cage. AFAIK no MTB is 10 spd yet although IMBW.

I have no idea about the bike, but my guess would be more road orientated hybrid. It's more a question of is there a technical reason I can't use an MTB '8sp' crankset with a road 10sp cassette?

You would be able to get it to work very easily.

As long as you are using modern parts, and certain parts would need to be 10speed specific. Of course you could just buy the new XTR, or XO croupsets which are 10 speed
