A better way of doing it than 'downloading', I don't own any form of Mp3 or iPlayer but Maz does and with my new CD player there is a facility to connect one by USB and use the CD players D/A chip to decode the signal so I tried it. The sound is better than connecting the headphone output to my Amplifier but there is a definite loss of 'detail' compared to CD. With a normal stereo this would probably not be noticeable and if you're just playing background/party music you'd never hear it but with a decent quality HiFi in a silent room the difference is startling.

I'm on a linux system and not all the download sites work with my computer, some of them rely on software downloaded onto the computer and don't do a version for linux, I used the play.com download service until it closed down, I'd download then burn to disc for a hard copy. Its easier to just buy the disc.

Vinyl is making a big comeback.

Not in our house, all the music on a Nas drive, plays on all devices TV, phone, wifi, radio hifi via one of these,( http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00O0U37HO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00 ) playlist selected by phone using this (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dbapp.android.mediahouseng ) you can set the Nas so you can access it over the internet if you want.

I know people will say Vinyl gives a better sound but my hearing is not that good so the hassle is not worth it.

Exactly. We are the same and having been too near loud sounds, my hearing does not justify perfection.

I think I've posted this tale before but.
A few years back when I worked a 12hr nightshift I'd got home on a Friday morning, Maz had gone off to work (as had the neighbours) so I made a cup of coffee poured a glass of Single Malt and rolled a big 'number' then put a record on and turned the volume up. After a couple of minutes I noticed an annoying distortion so lifted the stylus up and cleaned it, put the record back on and there was still this distortion so I started checking all the connections for a problem, couldn't get rid of this intermittent buzz so after about 20 minutes thought "Ah well must be time for a new stylus, I'll pop into town later and get one"
By now I'd finished the cup of coffee so went into the kitchen to put the kettle on to find that the buzz was much louder in there 10 seconds later I'd identified the culprit.......................................................The heating elements in the toaster vibrating.
It'll be the end when they supply music at lossless quality. I do subscribe to Spotify premium and it's very good, but it's time they upped the quality.
@User259

I use this for individual album downloads in FLAC format.

There is a streaming service but I've not really looked at it properly.

I use Apple Music - trialled it for free for three months now pay the subscription. I find it really good - mostly I download stuff over a good wifi connection (sadly not home) so I can listen to it offline. The interface is a bit clunky to start with but fine once you get used to it. I would imagine Spotify is just as good and Deezer is supposed to be ok too.

The thing to remember though with getting high quality recordings, is that they're still only as good as the system used to play the audio!

This is probably why lossless downloads are not exactly mass market - many people own music systems that are not up to the job of reproducing music faithfully to the recording or their whole musical experience has been via eg ipods/Phones etc.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that of course - if theyeare happy with what they are hearing then that's great.

Tbh high-end audio can go the other way - the pursuit of perfection can overtake the primary purpose of listening to music in the first place ie to enjoy the sound.

We have a pretty decent system (Bluesound Node / Sugden Master Class / Dynaudio) and if I'm to be truthful my ageing ears no longer do it's capabilities justice.

Sugden Master Class  nice Amplifier, when I split up with Pamela (amicably about 25yrs ago) I took my Hifi with me and we went shopping for a new set-up for her. She ended up with a Sugden A25B, fantastic sound.
I had a QUAD 33/303 at the time, still got it but I've now changed to a 44 pre and use a pair of 303s. My old 33 now acts as a turntable/phono amp to the Yamaha 5:1 surround amp in the front room.
My lovely QUAD set-up
