My dusty crack is getting bigger and now it smells of smoke!

Pfffft! Rake out and repoint, job's a good 'un.

The arch has to be supported, if we were to rake out without supporting the arch the lack of mortar support between the bricks could put too much pressure on the arch and cause it to collapse!

I'd be getting some underpinning sorted out before stitching the brickwork back together, or at least looking to fix the cause before the symptoms.

I've known a couple of friends who have had subsidence, none on your scale:eek:, makes theirs seem insignificant. Still they should end up redecorating for you, hope you have picked out some new paint colours.

I was joking! Sorry if it didn't come across that way. I don't think I'd find sleep easily in your house as it is currently. It reminds me of our first house, where the previous owner had knocked two ground floor rooms and a hallway into one big room, supporting the upper floor on RSJs. All well and good, except that when I removed some cheap and nasty wall panelling, I found that the RSJs were supported on one side by nothing more than pieces of 2" by 3" softwood.

Oh mercy!

Finding some sloe wine I made two and a half years ago while having to empty cupboards is helping me sleep
