Well here we are 8 months later ..
I snapped my left Achilles tendon .. it healed Long, the gap was 40mm.
So now I have a permanent limp, the 18 weeks in a cast has left my calf atrophied and Im struggling to rebuild it. Before the incident I regularly walked 5-6 miles at least twice a week now I struggle to walk a mile ….
BUT ..
I can cycle, miles and miles … and do so every morning, so life is good ..😄

Did they repair it or do the conservative thing of putting you in a boot then adjusting every couple of weeks?

Boot and wedges .
Great Phyiso… but .. healing long means the limp is for life. I can cycle as far as I want, struggle on hills… as usual .. my focus is on walking … every day after my cycle ….👍

When I ruptured mine I was told we treat it conservatively unless your really active, so they said we will treat conservatively. I pointed out I ruptured it rock climbing and I cycle, weight trained and hill walked.
So given this I used our health insurance courtesy of Mrs W’s work and saw someone privately who mended lots of Rugby League players.
I have no limp.
I despair with the NHS sometimes and I worked for them for over 30 years.

I feel where you are coming from OP. I can cycle all day long with my spinal damage and hip socket damage, but walking. I can walk and walk, but do not expect me to do it round shops, twisting and turning, stopping and starting. That causes havoc with my back, and now with the more recently busted hip.

I didn’t present to health care until nearly 2 weeks after the injury. I have a life long history of getting hurt, spinal injuries, broken bones, torn this and that … climbing mountains, surfing, kayaking, running, … hiding ! …. a gsw, 2 helicopter crashes …. Etc … 🤔. Oh, cycling and motorcycling have added a few visits to A&E ….. SO … I didn’t rush to health care. With a 41mm gap it was too late for any other outcome …. At my age I'm ok with where we are …. I’m off for a weeks cycling, and swimming in the sea, in Cornwall in the morning… then back to our place in Saltfleet for some cycling and walking for a week … Me and Julie are only really back in Rotherham for my oncology and physio appointments these days …😁

I too didn’t present immediately to health care. I drove home from Sheffield to East Yorkshire with my ankle strapped up ( Saturday) walked round Beverley Sunday, went into work Monday. Ended up in Minor injuries on Monday after colleagues insisted I needed medical attention. Put in cast then told to attend the fracture clinic Tuesday. From there arranged private appointment with Orthopaedic consultant about a week later who booked me in for surgery the following day.
So it was about 2 weeks from injury to surgery although I was in cast after a few days
From the conversations that I had with the surgeon I believe there is better outcome with surgery but I guess he would say that as that’s how he pays for his Porche.😏
