So I bought a nice Passat estate a few years ago to stick bikes on and in. It's a lovely car but has had a string of problems and as a result has been in and out of my local VW dealership. They sold me the car when it was 6 months old and as I have gotten to know them they regularly joke about how unreliable my car is and how unlucky I must be to have the one that always goes wrong.

The most recent warranty repair was 2 months ago when they had to replace the water pump and crank bearing seal as it was leaking both oil and coolant. This is relevant to the story because they had to remove the top engine mount to do the work. Fast forward to yesterday evening...

My engine fell out. An almightly clonk followed by a lot of rumbling and vibration got my attention quite quickly. I pulled over but couldn't see anything obvious in the dark so very slowly and carefully made my way home. This morning I investigated further and found the top engine mount has come away completely and the engine has dropped on to the chassis cross member. I'm guessing the driveshafts, fuel lines etc etc will all need checking and replacing as a minimum...

I have had the car taken to the sister dealer of the one that did the work. They're going to investigate what has gone wrong and work out what to do next - I've already told them they're not getting a penny out of me and if they cant fix it I'm parking it upside down in their car lot

I thought VW's were supposed to be reliable

Mechanic stroke apprentice fooked up, id go see the manager, and talk about talking to VAG UK service if you dont get any joy.
Very poor stndard of workmanship, and maybe their mechanics may be why your car keeps going wrong?

As for VW reliability.. Seat and Skoda seem better than their own brand

This, sounds like appalling spannering on the dealers behalf, perhaps find a decent independent VW specialist once the warranty has expired

Or Korean. I've always had Jap cars, but Korean cars are excellent. Kia offer a 7 year warranty, VW, BMW only offer 3, Mercedes 4 I think. That says a lot. I have a VW (Golf GTD), but its a company car. It's well built, but a bit dull. When I owned my own cars they were always Japanese, never had an issue with any, I always bought them about 5 years old and ran them for ages.

I agree with Cycleops, sounds like a lemon. I'd be trying to get my money back somehow. I know it might not happen, but that sounds like a pile of crap. Or ask them about an exchange, threaten to rubbish them on social media.

I agree with Meta Ion with regards to Skoda. Most Taxi's around here are Octavia's and they have very high mileages.

Mrs D's new Sportage is a pile of sheet. So badly made it feels almost biodegradable. Fortunately less than a month until it's gone. Trying to persuade Kia to actually honour the 7 year warranty is hard work. I just thank the Lord it's a lease vehicle because I'd have torched it long ago if we'd owned it.
