My new bank card will let me buy stuff at a checkout, but won't let me access my account from an ATM

Good luck with changing your fingerprints if they get stolen by hackers.

Smartphones can be fooled by high resolution photos. Just make sure there aren't any of your fingerprints!

So, assuming it does and I get it installed, how does it then work ?

The app will ask you to either input the card details or use the camera to scan it in. The app will then check with your bank it is allowed as not all accounts, cards, banks do.

Once all up and running its is good to use. When ready to pay you open the app. Most phones have a quick access, often a side button on the phone. It will then require the phone to be unlocked however you have that setup (Face ID etc). You then present your phone to the shop reader like you would a contactless card. It then processes the payment and gets takes from your card.

You can have multiple cards and choose which you choose at the point of payment.
There is no limit other than what the shop may set. You can pay thousands.
Your unlocking of the phone is what makes it more secure than a physical card.
You can still use your physical card and worth keeping on you in al see phone battery dies.

iPhones use their LiDAR sensor to scan a persons face so aren’t fooled by a photo.

Banks don't always make this clear, but sometimes you have to use your new card for purchase at a till, by inserting the card (not contactless) and using your PIN to validate. This then completes the card validation, to allow you to draw cash from an ATM after that.

Might not be the case for all banks/cards, but was for my last card (HSBC). Once I'd bought something by inserting the card at the till, I could immediately withdraw cash.

Download Google Wallet from the Google Store and follow the instructions.

Much more secure than chip and PIN.

Banks are very pro wallets.

That was the bit my new HSBC card wouldn't do.

I've broken at least two debit cards in the last year. The contactless works fine, but when required to put in the number, the card reader won't read the chip. Just got my third in 12 months. Fortunately, google wallet updates the moment the bank issues the card, even before you get it. I had to pop the card in when paying and use the pin to activate it. Don't tell Dave you can even pay with a smart watch, that will blow his mind !

That's one of the reasons why I bought my Fenix 6,then found out that the Royal Bank of Scotland won't allow their cards to sign up to Garmin pay. 😂

Go into a branch and let them check the card. Happened to me once and turned out the little chip thing was damaged.

I phoned Lioyds bank up today. It was my mistake, but I'm not taking all the blame. OK, I'd got my 2 middle numbers of my pin number the wrong way round, but when I ofter do that the ATM says 'incorrect pin number. Please try again'. If that'd shown I'd have tried a different combination, but it showed this instead, making me think there was something wrong with the card. And to be fair, I did what it said and contacted my bank. I couldn't do it last night as the helpline goes off at 6pm, so I phoned up today.

Get a Curve card for free and link you RBOS card to it.

Your fault, I just re-type mine what ever the error. Lloyds are pretty good, and the app is really good these days for banking. Very happy with them now.

Your cards don't develop a bum shaped curve after they've been pressed in your back pocket do they? If so, you need to make sure they go in your wallet the right way round: so that it's a convex curve, not a concave one. That way the curve is pushing the chip contacts closer to the reader contacts and not moving them further away.

Are you saying that Lloyds told you what your PIN number was over the phone?
