Sorry I'm confused by 'single crank arm' you only want it to have 1 pedal?

Here's a video;

All the tools you need apart from sockets should be in this £25 basic tool kit from Decathlon;

I should have most basic tools anyway from work, alan keys, spanners etc

That looks like a cartridge bottom bracket, unlikely to need servicing in this case.

I take it this means its a sealed unit and therefore nothing to grease?

That's right. You can find videos and info on the internet on how to service them, but they last a very long time without needing attention.

Also i want to keep a eye out for a used single front ring, or a double or tripple i can strip to a single, looks like mine is welded together or something and unable to split them

Any ideas on what I need to keep a eye out for in terms of fitting?

Those pads are not worn at all. Older budget cable caliper brakes are notoriously difficult to adjust. Have a look on YouTube for fix it videos. I think the best upgrade you can do is get some better caliper.
Yes, those cheaper Shimano chain rings are one piece and non separable.

I should see what you can find at a lower price with good reviews. I think there are some cheaper Shimano units that get good press.
