Interesting news from my LBS this morning:

Great news from Shimano!!! They have found a way to finish the compact vs. mid compact debate and give you all the gears you need, all the time! They issued the following statement this morning:
"For 2017 our top engineers have tried a bold new concept after asking normal cyclists what gear ranges they needed on their bikes, rather than just asking the pros. We found the public weren't engaging with the idea of swapping your chainset out depending on what ride you were planning that afternoon, some people just wanted gears that could get them up any hill and still leave them with a decent top speed for descending"
"Based on these findings we have made a revolutionary step forward in bicycle design. By adding a small inner ring that we call an 'Underdrive Ring' (patent pending) to a traditional 'double' chainset we have achieved the impossible - a gear range wide enough to cover all eventualities"
"What has made our concept even more totally genius is that by modifying an existing shifter and front mech the only additional weight is a tiny ring of aluminium, which really weighs bugger all"

When asked if this was similar to the 'triple' chainset a spokesman replied "Piss off. No-one uses triples anymore"
