The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Tyres?
Oh yeah, and don't buy 'lightly used' - defeats your snobbery argument big time! If you can't afford it new today, then wait until you can.
If you are coming at from the snobbery angle, the lowest you can go for is Ultegra 6800, 11 speed, and you won't find much of that 'pre owned' yet. Then you will have to have new wheels - Kysrium Elites maybe. New all that will cost about £1K from Merlin, for example - and it will all look a bit odd on the Allez frame.
Seriously - wheels will make the biggest difference, and something like Aksiums would be a sensible choice.

Looks like I'll be getting the wheels first, thanks guys. I definitely do not want 105 I'll make that clear again and that's my choice and I won't budge from it, everything I do buy will one day be put onto the next frame anyway but I am very happy with the feel look and weight of my current frame at the moment for the sort of riding I do

You don't have money to burn, yet you have to have Ultegra or Dura Ace? IMO, you'd be better off saving your pennies getting a better frame with ultegra or dura ace as it'll be cheaper on the long run.

Anyway, I'll say the same as everyone else. Decent wheels & decent tyres.

Cube Agree GTC SL £1,899 with Ultegra groupset and most likely better wheels than the stock ones on the Allez. http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Cube-Agree-GTC-SL-Compact-2014-Road-Bike_66765.htm

It appears iris on 18 months interest free at c. £95/month too, if needed / will help with cash flow.

Possibly only £900 (which is obviously a lot of cash) more than getting Ultegra gruppo and new wheels for the Allez, but you get a whole new bike and a plastic one at that. Potentially better value than upgrading over time, but obviously a greater initial outlay than gruppo and wheels alone.

For only a couple of hundred more you could get the GTC SLT, which looks great in the flesh, especially outside and you get SRAM force, which would be my preference over Ultegra. http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Cube-Agree-GTC-SLT-Compact-2014-Road-Bike_66766.htm

I imagine everyone is trying to offer the benefit of their experiences and possibly mistakes, I went down the upgrade route on my Allez and have changed to a different bike. There were surprisingly few bits I carried across, gruppo, handlebars, pedals and tyres. Everything else I had upgraded is now sitting in the garage.

Ultimately to your money and all that matters is that you are happy with what you choose. And obviously that you ride it! Enjoy.

Thought I might just jump in with this.

Cant do links (techno numpty) so...

Been on Planet X site today & they have both 45mm & 52mm carbon clinchers (alloy brake track) @ £450 & £399 - limited options available as yet.

They weigh in at around 1790 gramme mark.

Alternatively I have been on a Dutch site also today... Hollandbikeshop.com

They have 3T Accelero Team 40 carbon clinchers @ €949 (again alloy brake track) so easy tyre changes & no need for carbon specific (& expensive) brake pads.
These are 43mm deep aero & weigh in at only 1620 grammes so are probably significantly lighter & more aero than your stock Allez hoops.

Sigma Sport have a sale on too & they are 3T stockists.

Fast Forward carbon wheelsets are on sale at Wiggle & are handmade in Holland with excellent hubs.

IMHO - (& believe me - i am far less knowledgeable than most here) ,lighter, stiffer wheels will improve your ride more than the group set initially at least.

Be interesting to see which way you go though.

Best of British.

Why are you snobby about the groupset? What do you expect it to do differently, apart from be a bit lighter? Do you have the thumb button Sora? If so, new Sora or Tiagra would be an improvement?

its the new sora, i just dont want a bottom end groupset and i dont want something in between ive decided on ultegra or dura ace so i dont see why people are still tying to change my mind haha, eventually the whole lot will go on a nice frame later in the year when i get my job back on track with the army so have the cash to splash on a frame, i will have enough for either groupset or wheels within the next few week's so am wanting to get one or the other first, and ive already decided due to all your opinions to get some wheels first. i dont want to buy a bike with all the bits included as i always like to build stuff myself so it has abit more meaning to me.

for wheels only about 250, at the moment looking at the Chinese carbon wheels but if anyone can recommend a nice set of wheels for around 250 that would be great, i am looking for lightness mainly, i find truing very therapeutic lol so they do not need to be super reliable
