Who's getting hungry, reading this? I'm close to going downstairs for a snack. Shame it's too late to go out for chips :hungry:

Thought you were a westie? Salt 'n' sauce?. Nooooo; salt and vinegar is what goes on chips!

Family are and I've spent plenty time living there but I was raised in Edinburgh so have fond memories of freezing my baws off at the football followed by a fish supper with salt and sauce.

In Manchester you have gravy on your Chinese fried rice

Shaun
I think you will find it's Chinese curry on fried rice. Although some chippies put gravy in their curry mix.

Chippies cease to exist somewhere around the South Wirral / Cheshire area.

Anything south of that neck of the woods is a poor imitation and should be prosecuted under the trades description act.....apart from a couple of nice ones in north Wales.....but that's only coz scousers on their toes from the bizzies moved there.

My sister lives in Oldham, much to family shame as it's now in Lancashire, we are all Tykes. The first time we went to see her she took us to a Fish-n-Chip restaurant and when I ordered Cod and Chips she jumped in with a 'No gravy' request. I laughed so much I nearly fell onto the floor. But apparently it's a common thing over the border!

Never has been in any bit of Manchester I've lived the last 25 years in.

Lived in Oldham a long time, married a local girl and I love my fish and chips, neither I nor Mrs SB nor her 84 year old father who has only ever lived away from Oldham for his national service have ever seen or heard of this. God alone knows where your sis took you but none of us have ever encountered this weird phenomenon.

Are you sure you don't live in Saddleworth?

So what time is "Dinner time"?
Brought up in Lancashire (now Merseyside), I used to walk home at 12:30 to find my mum had my dinner on the table waiting, then walk back for the afternoon lessons. After school, it was time for tea at about 5pm and supper was cheese and crackers just before bed.

When we moved down south, had to wait until after 7pm for dinner and the best meal of the day.

Chips and gravy is lovely, but the true winner is chips with chippy sauce, which, sadly, I've never seen in a takeaway outside Edinburgh.

Make your own by mixing brown sauce and vinegar. Ratios to taste, there are no rules.

Grew up in Manchester but lived in Edinburgh for 4 years so also love chips and gravy as well as the old 'salt n sauce'. Must say that Edinburgh chippies were the only place where I've seen them fry pizzas!
