Just wondering, and he/she seems strangely reluctant to answer.

Because it is utterly irrelevant to the discussion. Move on.

I don't think anyone claimed it was homophobic. As I said earlier, I'm just surprised that some people still find that kind of out-dated 'gay/lycra' stereotype nonsense funny. Even without the gay references, it's still a tired joke.

That's *not* the joke, though.

It also reinforces the general prejudice against cyclists. Every time someone objects to this continual anti-cyclist so-called "humor", they get chastised for not having a sense of humor, thus perpetuating the view that it's acceptable to ridicule cyclists. That's the prevailing attitude in Australia, too, and many other 'Western' countries.

It isn't anti-cyclist humour, it's anti-anti-cyclist humour. That's what you're not grasping.

Well that made interesting reading. Here's my take on it. The article is satire and the site it appears on is a pastiche of a tabloid newspaper and articles that appear therein.

The jokes, such as they are, are as follows:

1. A joke about jokes about cyclists in which a clearly ridiculous academic institution has confirmed that these jokes actually have a basis in truth.

2. A joke about gay stereotypes having a basis in truth and being indicative of something, again given credence by a clearly fictional academic institution.

So it's a joke about a joke and a joke about a stereotype.

Whether you find it funny is a different matter. I hope you do, because I wrote it.

Although I think I just bored any humour right out of it!

I fully get what the site is - it's another spoof like Dailymash, Newsthump, etc - although they generally do the satire thing a lot better than this. Generally though, I like that kind of stuff. Whatever interpretation is put on this as a topic, the subject matter and content is still tired and out of date. And if the intention was to subtly make that point in the piece, then you failed. Sorry mate, if you were writing a joke, I think you need some better material. No offence like.

shoot I thought I was a grumpy old git, but some of you take the biscuit, being offended on somebody else's behalf

My best mates son is openly gay & lives with his boyfriend, yet even he makes jokes when his father goes out in Lycra suggesting he'd be a hit in the clubs they go to. So should he be chastised for being gay & prolonging the gay stereotype, or should we all just chuckle if we found it funny & move on if we didn't.
