The word they're looking for doesn't have to be long, or complicated. They'll choose three of them, from what you chose, when it comes to asking you to verify the account.
Too long or complicated and it'll make it harder for yourself, not anyone else.

So do I send one word or three? I thought I'd be sending one word, then press enter, then they'd tell me to send another. When they'd received three they'd allow me to go onto 'Next'.🤔

Well yes, surely I could make the payment with my Halifax card, giving my 4 digits etc. Having said that, I think it'll be best to go into my nearest Halifax branch. I could phone the Halifax helpline, but I don't even trust that to be totally fraud proof.

It's not 100%, but it's near as damnit. You'll have to pass security checks and your interactions with the bank will be recorded.

Their contact centre opens at 8am tomorrow. Call them and stop fannying about on here worrying about it.

i'd walk away from any deal that required money transfer to an unknown/unverifiable seller

Indeed. My Wife nearly made an error when trying to make a holiday booking a few years ago. The 'owner' of the property (the fraudster who'd hacked the owner's email!) wanted a bank transfer. I responded to 'his' email by saying my friend lived local to him, and my friend would pay him cash if he'd give his address. Strangely, we never heard from him again, but we sent a report to Action Fraud.

This doesn't sound good to me. There have been many cases of vehicles being 'sold' by fraudsters who've lifted images of vehicles from the websites of genuine car dealers.

Well they did want me to travel the 36 miles to their showroom to look at it, before possibly buying it. It was me who asked them to bring it to me to have a look at it. Saying I didn't fancy driving 72 miles there and back. They sent me a video of the car after I requested it. The video was taken in what looks like a genuine car showroom, to me.

They'll ask for something like the 4th, 7th and 8th characters of your chosen memorial word, and you're expected to know them. Another time they could ask for the 1st, 8th and 2nd characters of your chosen word. To be given in the order they ask for them.

It's simple once in place, but if you've any worries about getting it right, either phone them, use their online chat or get to a branch and let the staff help you. A lot safer than persisting with asking questions, when others have already given similar answers. Do nothing until you've checked with the Halifax, however you choose, and go with their advice.
Don't listen to them, and you may be told you're responsible for any loss suffered.
