Here is it. Proposed use will be for video processing, graphics work and having a second hd installed for running Linux distros on one / Windows 7 on the other.

Does it really need all those fans?

Any other observations and comments welcomed.

Looks great value with good overclocking potential if you ever find it isn't fast enough for you

No mention of the brand\model of supplied PSU which would raise a question with me, but the 2 yr warranty should reassure you in that respect.

Also, for graphics & video work, the card is certainly not the fastest in the latest terms which will be the performance bottleneck* (and provide a very easy upgrade path at a later time)...but adding another 4gb and using the 64bit o/s's would go a long way to compensate anyway should you so choose.

*bottleneck - the video card is fairly quick, but the cpu can provide it with data faster than the card can process it in some cases. Should be plenty speedy all the same.

Cheers 2Loose - I'm thinking along the same lines. The video card will likely be fine to start off with and I'm looking forward to the 64bit boost all round.

I don't know of the firm at all previous to seeing this base, but they've been around since 1997 according to their website and this base seems to get good reviews from purchasers.
The variable speed control knob for the fans is intriguing - do all i5 bases need to be able to call on extra cooling fans when the processor is working hard, and if so why the user-variable control? Surely the m/b should decide fan speed?

Not all motherboards have the connections to control fan speed themselves, certainly not so many of them, so a controller is provided for the user to do it themselves. Although I have such a controller I confess that I set it to 'quiet\middle-ish' and leave it alone.
