Ah, fartichokes eh ...
That's their name round this way.
Some members of the family are so terribly afflicted they won't eat them.

Probably best never to feed them to equines!

If people are terribly afflicted, they're best eating them in very small quantities, regularly. Lets their guts get used to the sugars and then the microbiome quietens its reactions ... I dunno about feeding them to horses, I always liked artichokes too much to waste them on supercharging the manure heap!

I knew there would be a horse thread somewhere...

This evening I was out on my bike and was climbing up a short hill on a narrow country lane when a man rode a large horse over the crest towards me. He stopped, so I continued. I called out to him so the horse could hear me talk. It gave me the once over and clearly realised that I was a human. Then it looked at my bike and kind of worked out what that was. Then it stared at the back of the bike and I saw that it was getting jittery so I immediately stopped and called out for the rider to continue instead. He thanked me as he passed and he told me that the horse was getting spooked by the rear pannier sticking out with its straps blowing in the wind!

I've a lot of time for horses on the road, but it's a shame their riders are sometimes asses.

Like the two idiots yesterday who decided to ride round a blind bend on the wrong side of the road. Worse, it was up a hill, so they met me head on, cycling down the hill towards them.
Good job I was only coasting down the hill, and not in a hurry. Even so, I had to stop pretty sharpish, and the horses did not look entirely comfortable.

I've had that too, well they were 2 abreast on a single track road, and it takes horse a while to get into single file. They may well have been able to see me coming over the hedges, i don't know, but they certainly didn't shout any warning and I had to brake pretty sharpish.

I also had the same with 2 joggers who seem startled to meet me as I rounded a blind corner, with them two abreast. I was on my side of the road and they were on the opposite side so we missed each other but I did detect some tutting as I wasn't going particularly slowly.

I'm now into assumption and surmising but they wouldn't have heard any cars so probably thought the corner was clear. Equally I couldn't hear any cars and subconsciously knew the road is just about wide enough to avoid one by hugging the verge if necessary. If they were two a breast on "my" side it could have been interesting, although I would have had a fraction longer to see them and miss them. Probably fault on both sides.
