Can't find a solution via trawling Google, so...

Have just discovered that the 3.5 mm - to - RCA cable from my TV to my AV amp is outputting the left channel to the right speaker and vice versa.

I know the speakers are cabled up correctly because when I play a CD and twiddle with the amplifier's "balance" knob, left is left and right is right.

As the TV is currently supporting the sound from both my Sky box and my computer, it is a bit disconcerting that all the channels are coming out on the wrong side.

Can anyone help me to get the sound reversed?

What about swapping over the loudspeaker cables at the AV amplifier?

So the 3.5mm jack is connected to your TV, and two male RCA connectors connect in to your amp? If that's the case, simply swap around the RCA cables on the amp end.

Does not the red connector have to go in the red port and the black in the black, though?

One connector is the left channel, and one connector is the right channel. If you have black in black, and red in red, yet the channels are still coming out reversed, I suspect the cable is colour coded incorrectly.

If you reverse them, the channels will also be reversed and your issue should be fixed.

This might sound like a realllly stupid question, but what do the red and black on RCA signify? Is it + and -ve and simply a circuit, or is it low-frequency and high-frequency, or is it L and R?

As above, left and right. One connector per channel.

One of the reasons I switched to proper audio equipment was because I wanted to start listening to music how it was intended to be heard. Would be a bit of a shame if I subsequently started listening to the left side on the right etc!
