I struggled earlier in the week as the heat's just another factor to keep me awake so I was enjoying the effects of a growing sleep deficit on top of heat itself.
We do have some air con lashed up in the office, although it's got a tough job and it still hit 30 in there for much of the week; at least mostly tolerable thanks to the reduced humidity.
It's been a battle in the flat; it's well insulated so resists the heat well throughout the day, but being ground floor I'm not comfortable leaving the windows open as a sleep which means I have limited opportunity to cool it down at the end of the day and it often gets hot / stuffy at night. On top of that nightly lows really haven' t been low, so it seems that despite my efforts the place is getting hotter day to day.
I do enjoy the game of managing it as best I can though; everything shut in the day, then thrown wide open as soon as the temperature drops in the evening. The blinds do a great job but I suspect the situation would be improved markedly if I actually bought some curtains..
It always amuses / amazes me the amount of people who fail to grasp the basics of keeping their place cool and only get as far as "windows open equals cooling down" even in the scorching afternoon heat.
Couple of folk hugged the concrete pillars in the office - they are used to support the building, but we also pump bore hole water through them to regulate the temperature all year round.
What a gloriously elegant engineering solution
Hopefully an an age thing but this heat made me feel really ill earlier. I can understand why some elderly people die in extreme heat.
I've noticed this too - a few times I've opened the flat up after a scorching day and felt tangibly more with it after ten minutes of cooling down a little.
It is 25.1 degrees in here now and I have only just remembered that I have a spare fan upstairs. Time to go and get it!
Thanks for the reminder!
After suffering to an extent all week, thanks to your post my monkey brain has finally acknowledged that large fan I've had hidden in plain sight in the hall since it was snaffled from an office clearance last year.
It's now doing a sterling job of assisting the morning's cold-air-flush through the flat; which is really welcome as it's dead still here today so otherwise not much air exchange going on. It's already hot out there but hopefully this will help fortify the place for today's third round..
Looks like it should be lower (30 deg) tomorrow, however I suspect it'll be reet muggy with it.
