So if torque reduces with crank length, and I am cycling at the same cadence on say 160mm and 170mm cranks (assuming same gear, bike etc.) then would I not be applying greater force to the pedals with the shorter crank in order to achieve the same cadence

Only if riding at same speed on a given road in given cadence. The thinking seems to be that you produce same power by slightly higher cadence with shorter cranks. After all there is only so much force your muscles can provide at 90 rpm etc.

Am seriously looking at a pair of the sod ones to replace my 4iii single crank one that is starting to eat batteries and drops out every now and then, gonna have to get my finger out and sell some of the spare kit I have to help pay for them.
