So if torque reduces with crank length, and I am cycling at the same cadence on say 160mm and 170mm cranks (assuming same gear, bike etc.) then would I not be applying greater force to the pedals with the shorter crank in order to achieve the same cadence

Only if riding at same speed on a given road in given cadence. The thinking seems to be that you produce same power by slightly higher cadence with shorter cranks. After all there is only so much force your muscles can provide at 90 rpm etc.

Am seriously looking at a pair of the sod ones to replace my 4iii single crank one that is starting to eat batteries and drops out every now and then, gonna have to get my finger out and sell some of the spare kit I have to help pay for them.

I have Brexit legs. 48/52.

Oh no. I'll get the thread closed for that! ;)

Oddly enough the stronger leg is my left which is (a) non dominant and (b) the knee that I wrecked and had to have major surgery on in 2006.

As posted earlier, this is entirely normal. Normal being anything closer than 45/55.
Anyone getting a sustained 50/50 split without paying direct attention to maintaining that will be extremely rare.

I do find it odd that my left leg is the stronger, given its non-dominance and medical history.

Not very odd, but slightly unexpected.
