It has been widely reported on CC that Doug has told anyone who'd listed "I wouldn't touch Farridge" with yours........and before you ask what 'yours' is......it's a nice pint of Blacksheep ale

Ok, so regarding the page numbers... Since I am drunk and am not psychologically sound (what's new?), for Class 52 'Western' Diesel Hydraulic (i.e. such an utterly epic class cut dead in their prime in 1977) 1000 - 1073 is, as fas I can remember...

D1000 Western Enterprise
D1001 ... Pathfinder (a very real candidate for preservation, but it was damaged in an accident)
D1002 ... Explorer

Urgh, basically everyone started with 'Western', ok? So we can dispose of it

D1003 Pioneer
D1004 Crusader
D1005 Venturer
1006 Stalwart

1007 Talisman, which was written off in the West Ealing crash in December 1973.
The loco had had maintenance before running and the hatches to battery boxes (on the lower part of the body) had not been secured properly.

The loco approached on a Paddington service, but the boxes opened and somehow caught a point lever, derailing the train.

Several people died and in testament, the modernised clips to prevent it happened again were called

'Tallisman Clips'

D1008 Western Harrier
D1009 ... Invader (another preservation candidate, but it had cracked springs

D1010 Western Campaigner - Now preserved, one of 7 saved.

D1011 Western Thunderer
D1012 Western Firebrand

D1013 Western Ranger - Preserved, being as it was, one of the last in service

D1014 Western Leviathan

D1015 Western Champion - The very last Western saved in 1979.
So the story goes, the members of the group who wanted it camped out on the Chairman of BR's doorstep as no more Westerns were for sale.

The Chairman of BR took pity and let them buy it.

The Chairman's name?

Peter Parker... MBE!!

... It is now the only one of it's class to run on the Mainline too, so if you have ever seen a large loco called 'Western Champion' when out and about... Then...

D1016 Western Gladiator
D1017... Warrior - one of the first to go in 1973/4.
D1018... Buccaneer
1019... Challenger
1020... Hero
1021... Cavalier
1022... Sentinel

1023... Fusilier - Western Fusilier is preserved at the National Railway Museum at York as it was the very last of the class and Diesel Hydraulic to run on BR 'metals'.

D1024... Huntsman
1025... Guardsman
1026... Centurion
1027... Lancer
1028... Hussar (actually Western Hussar was one of the last to be scrapped in 1979).
1029... Legionnaire
1030... Musketeer
1031... Rifleman
1032... Marksman
1033... Trooper
1034... Dragoon
1035... Yeoman
1036... Emperor
1037... Empress
1038... Sovereign
1039... King
1040... Queen
1041... Prince (Western Prince is preserved).
1042... Princess
1043... Duke
1044... Duchess
1045... Viscount
1046... Marquess
1047... Lord
1048... Lady (Western Lady is preserved)
1049... Monarch

D1050, where we now are was

D1050 Western Ruler

Roll on D1051 Western Ambassador!
