Just after a bit of advice from fellow CCers. What are peoples thoughts, is it worth the financial sacrifice to send your child to private school ?

Depends on two things:

1) How much of a sacrifice are the fees to you

2) How good are the free state school alternatives

My personal opinion is that education is an investment that repays itself many times over so I am paying for my son to go to a fee paying school. Yes this means sacrifices but these are sacrifices worth making given the difference between the fee paying and state schools in the area.
If you have a really good state school you can get your child into I would say save your cash, unless you have bucketloads

And maybe a third - if the proposed private school is a lot better than the local state school, is your child talented enough to benefit from that?
Oh, and a fourth. Private schools can be very snobby and snotty places - from the children rather than the staff - so if your child is from a very different background it could be a miserable experience.

It's my experience that regardless of the school and the teachers, good ability kids will always rise to the surface.
The more difficult one is the socialising side of things. I know one lad that went to a private school and got mixed up in all sort of drug issues and ultimately he didn't achieve any more than he would have with a state education- it doesn't always fit the stereotype you expect.

He's a pretty bright kid (I'm sure all parents think that of theirs ?) so I think a private school will build on this and allow him to progress at his own rate maybe. My concern would be in a state school he would not find his full potential as he gets older.
From what I know of the school it's not snobbish (a little I guess but not real in your face stuff) it just looks an awesome place and to have the opportunity to send the little one there is a nice feeling. There's just something nagging my mind with it's a big sacrifice to make.

Depends if you have designs on the child becoming am M.P.
He speaks more sense now than M.P's do Piemaster !

Thanks for your replies so far folks.

Both my sons went to the local comp, both got three A,s at A level , both went to good uni's and got good degrees followed by good jobs.

Be involved with rhe school give good home support, that matters more than some poncy private school unless you think your kid is to good to mix with the locals.
