Awful Rando, just awful. I hope you are mending well.

Keep us posted on your recovery, I hope you can get back on a bike eventually. The human willpower and self-belief can do amazing things!

When I was 16 I smashed my shoulder up when I came off my bike and straight into a barbed wire fence. The Dr's said "you'll never get full movement in that shoulder again". Absolute BS! I went to see a really good physio and together we got it all working again.

Get Well Soon Randochap. It sounds like you have your head on straight but sometimes the recovery can be the hardest part. Feel free to abuse us on here if it gets too much.

Just to confirm that the docs always give the worst case scenario in terms of your prognosis. A few years ago my other half broke his jaw in three places and dislocated and fractured his elbow.

After the operation to repair his face, where they inserted titanium screws in two parts of his jaw, they said he wouldn't have the full range of facial movement back on one side - he has - it just came back eventually. They also said he wouldn't have the full range of movement in his elbow back either - and he has. He does a very physical job, so it was 'natural' physio like that which helped him recover.

Just call me Chris...
Only just read this........;)

That's really horrific, get well soon and wishing you a speedy recovery.
Sorry the words are a bit weak but I don't really know what else to say.

Hope you're back in the peleton very soon.

Glad to know you're alive, but that sounds dreadful, Rando...

And the guy isn't getting charged after going through a red and almost killing you? That's ridiculous...

Huh, just confirms my suspicion that Canada is no better a place than here or the US, however much they'd like to think it....

I'd like to think Randochap could sue his ass off, but he'll probably turn out not to be very rich pickings. I'm not in favour of sueing over every little thing, but this defies belief. Let's at least hope he's one of the few who alters his behaviour due to the shock of it all.

^^ I agree - sue!

Sounds as if the rules are the same in Canada as here. The motor vehicle is king, for it the rules of the road are optional, and if people get hurt by them thats just one of those things.

It'll be a while before you know what'll be possible and what not, but in my experience the physios, surgeons, and everyone else involved will help you direct your determination and will power to the best outcome there can be.

Good luck.

Spent couple hours with the shrink today. Trying to deal with the psychic scars.

We tend to "man up," soldier on ... but just below the surface -- I'd say buried in the bruised and violated viscera -- lie the memories, fear and dread of two tons of rampaging steel, haunting dream and imagination like some metallic boogie man.

It'll be a while before I can transcend the anxiety and shock hiding there.

G'night. Sweet dreams?

Sorry to hear about this rando. It's terrible when this happensto cyclists but is especially nasty when it happens to people who have a love of cycling.

In ALL respects, get well soon!

Since a few people have asked elsewhere (thanks for your concern):

I had my second appointment with the surgeon on Wednesday, including an X-ray.

There's no noticeable bone growth, two months since the incident.

Doc stressed that I'm unlikely to have full recovery in the ankle joint -- movement will be severely compromised ... though he believes I will have enough to return to cycling -- at what level is a question that won't be answered for a long time.

On the positive side, the large wound is almost completely closed and skin graft appears healthy. The donor site is a bit more of an issue, though it is improving slowly.

Trying to wean myself off the pain killers. Not fun.

Got over the street to the park today, for a street festival. How wonderful to get out in the sun and autumn breeze!

On edit: Oh, yeah ... and I got pneumatic tyres for the chair! Ex-pat Londoner did a fine job.

Sorry I've only just found this thread - you sound like you have a really positive attitude given the severity of the accident. Wishing you the best for the future.
