After gently pressurising it with a 4x4, you could always pick the gravel out, soak it in batter, and deep fry it for an hour or so. There are people, so I'm told, who will eat deep fried anything.
First layer 4 longitudinal 1 transverse across the top, second layer 5 transverse. You have to start at the top though as the two transverse stacked together tend to fall out..
