If you have cycling friends you will be very popular, ime. Surprising how many people have clobbered their derailleur at some time.

That’s interesting. Could you elaborate a bit as I can’t quite work out the method?

I obviously don't know the detail of Skolly's method, but I use a broken axle which has the same thread as the hanger.
Unscrew the RD, screw in the ex-axle, slide on a bit of square piping (maybe 6" long), and then place spirit level on that.
Hangers invariably bend in the vertical plane.
