Sounds much like Cycling UK, frankly.

Back when CUK "changed" (when a professional career charity CEO took over and in my opinion destroyed the last remnants of "Touring") a couple of keen UK touring people tried to setup a "CTC" look-alike (UK organisation) which showed promise. Web site, etc. but they didn't get the numbers they'd need to have made a viable organisation.

Can't remember it's name but I have the feeling one of the instigators was called Rob (which probably means I'm wrong on that).

It's a shame they didn't get the numbers as there is probably a case for such an organisation, but I suspect a lot of CTC members (before it changed to CUK) did not tour, in my case the main reason for joining was for the insurance, which came in handy when I was knocked off.
I do think CUK try to look after the needs of cycling, and make a better job of it than BCF, who do well looking after the sporty side.

I think these things can take a time to gain "traction" and maybe they could have given it longer but they did give it a fair time and it's very easy for somebody (like me) who isn't going the work to say "more work for longer".

They were setting things up as very member based in terms of looking for (potential) members so say what it shoudl be/do and how it should be organised.

And then sometimes for no identifiable reason some things gain "traction" and take off and others don't and being good or bad doesn't always determine what takes-off.

I think this is true. I do wonder, if CUK wasn't there who would be promoting cycling to and for the masses? Who else would have the clout to They aren't perfect, that's for sure, but they are way better than nothing plus if you don't like them simply ignore them.

Government is keen on promoting it. A bit of promotion and advertising is cheaper than actually doing their job and making roads better for cycling or building useful infrastructure.

Sorry, it’s French and I only ever heard the acro. Translates as Federation of Users of Bicycles, or something like that.

Thanks for the link, I shall peruse at my leisure. I note there's no group near me but I could set one up. I won't of course. Not the sort of thing I do. I leave the promotion bit to others, people better suited and motivated. I'm motivated to ride but not so much inviting others to.

Just got the newly rebranded CTC magazine, not impressed. There’s nothing in the new branding that I can identify with, it just looks the same as loads of generic charity or cycle shop logos. And the new jersey is fine if sport riding is your thing but not for anyone else. Confirmation that the organisation has well and truly turned its back on its previous membership.
