Personally that's just another reason not to trust it

Indeed, we all know carbon fibre dissolves in the rain, and melts in the sun. It is why I would never use a carbon fibre bike to visit the Titanic.

Absolutely no correlation either way that I can see, so carbon must be good.

Didn't John Lennon ride a steel bike, pretty sure he did

I fly regularly on civil aircraft that have carbon fibre wings. Should be safe as long as it doesn't rain.

I'm not sure about the effects of rain! But it's worth raising failures in plane wings.
They certainly do kill people:

The research involved collecting 139 aircraft fatigue failure
accident reports from the Aviation Safety Network database,
which were coded using a directed content analysis. The
trends and features of the categorical data were then explored
using an ex-post facto study. The results showed that fatigue
failure accidents have increased at a rate of (3.4 ± 0.6)×10-2
per year since the 1920’s. Over the period of the study there
were 2098 fatalities in 57 fatal accidents
, giving (15.1 ± 1.6)
fatalities per accident and a fatal accident percentage of (45
± 10)%.

Now, this is clearly very low compared to the number of passenger miles - good! But you only have to read the first page of that study to realise the ENORMOUS safety measures taken by airlines to keep it that way. Do you think Trek - let alone $random_ebay_seller - do that level of checks and monitoring?

Yes, CF aeroplanes fail. Steel bike frames fail. Carbon/Al/Ti frames and forks fail. That doesn't mean all these things are the same...

Sounds like something that John Wayne would have said too !

Well, you never saw them both in the same room . . . .
