After 12 years i stopped using clipless pedals in September this year. Since then I have covered over 1000 miles and have noticed no significant differences. I usually ride 30 / 60 miles sometimes further at average 15.5 / 18 mph depending on terrain.
Maybe I just wasn't using the clip on s properly. But flats work for me I will not be changing back despite the "good natured banter" I have to suffer.

fair enough, it's a free country. I noticed a difference, but then I used to pedal with my instep. Feel uncomfortable without clipins now. I do object to special shoes though - but I guess that's the price you pay.
