Recently bought myself a pair of XT pedals (not to use on the MTB) to use with my Road Bike. Fitted the cleats to my Old (very old) Specialised MTB Shoes, I've turned the adjustment to maximum Negative! (easy out) for quick release! I must say, I'm getting along well with them. So Well, that I'm considering putting the XT Pedals on the MTB; and> Buying a new pair of Road Shoes & Pedals for the Cube Carbon Road Bike.

Q, What type of road pedals do you use; and recommend?

Q, What road shoes do you use and recommend?

I, was looking at the Shimano 105, pedals and the Mavic Avenair Shoes! I'm a standard size 8, (42) shoe size; and normal width fitting.

Any help and advise would be appreciated

How much do you want to spend? What sort of riding do you do? When do you want to ride?

For summer I've got a pair of DHB carbon soled shoes with Look Keo 2 Max Carbon pedals, the winter bike uses Outland Keo compatible pedals and I've got Northwave GTX winter boots. I find the Outland pedals as good as the Looks, they're not as light though. The Northwaves do a great job in winter, but my feet would cook in summer!

I've not had experience of Shimano, Time or Speedplay pedals, but all come recommended by those who use them!

Hi E,

I'd not thought of the cost as yet! Just looking for some recommendations for both pedals and shoes!

Road shoes feel different to riding with MTB shoes. They're stiffer and you get a larger contact area. They're also harder to walk in (check out youtube for clips of cyclists falling over...) hence why I've now got a pair of winter boots. If you're going down the low-cost route, I really would recommend the Outland Keo-compatible pedals. £25 for pedals and cleats from Ebay (Graham Weigh cycles I think) and they've not missed a beat. Make sure they're the white ones though, they upgraded the bearings in them over the earlier black version according to the Cycling Plus review I read.

For what it's worth, I use SPDs on my road bike but, as a compromise to cover both commuting when I want to be able to walk a bit and longer weekend rides when I want some more support for my feet, I use MTB shoes with a solid/rigid sole. These are not great for walking in, but with some minimal tread to recess the cleat they are adequate for my needs and, more importantly, the rigid sole supports my foot like a road shoe on longer rides.
