It's a bit more complicated than that...
Find one of each and try them? I would imagine the Rohloff is a pretty seamless transition through the gears, My Alfine 8 is v good but you do notice particularly the step from 4 to 5.
Somewhere onine (?on Sheldon Brown's site) there's a gearing calculator. Input your tyre size and the number of teeth on your cogs and whether you've got a hub gear and it will spit out gear inches.

For what it's worth, I love the Rohloff for the touring tandem - it's much easier to set up than a derailleur. I've no idea how it would work on a fast bike.
