I fell for the very same scam .

Interweb chatting to a young lady in Hong Kong, i fell hook line and sinker for her entanglement web of lust and good looks,,,,,,not quite sure when she will put her evil plans into action as we have now been married for 11 years next May and have a 6 year old daughter.

I think the scam must be in the "Long Game" style.

Contact the airport / security? - I'm sure they don't like this type of scam on their 'manor' ...
The point is that 'she' is never going to actually make it to the airport because some very expensive problem will crop up to delay 'her' arrival. The poor old man will be conned into sending cash to sort the problem out ...

I have to apply regularly for business visas for African countries and they are a pain in the neck, generally requiring letters of invitation from you local contact, often endorsed by the local Police, along with company letters, copies of household bills, bank accounts and all kinds of other stuff. This is usually a tit-for-tat thing because Britain makes it so difficult for other nationals to get UK visas. The worst visa to apply for is Nigerian, which requires the use of a web form that's so crap and designed to frustrate that I just hand it to a visa agent in London who does them all the time. Others like Ivory Coast require you to travel to London where you enter a stinking filthy consular office, a delightful little piece of Africa in Belgravia, to be fingerprinted for an e-visa. Last time I went down they couldn't get my fingerprints because my fingers are smooth from lots of DIY so after three hours they gave up and hand-wrote an old style visa. Oh and the fees aren't modest; that for Nigeria costs $475.

Similarly I have to visit the office above the Bank of China in Manchester for the "pleasure" of applying for a Chinese visa. This is home to the most expensive photocopying charge I have ever had the pleasure of paying, 50p per copy. And the visa costs about £230. Used to be about £70 but UK has been jacking up visa prices for years and other countries just follow suit

I was once denied a Chinese visa because one of my old visas (from about 8 years previously) had finally come unstuck and had fallen out. They said the only way I could get a visa was to get a new passport from Liverpool and then reapply. All with about a week until travelling.

They do a "same day" service that got me out of a real Chinese visa office-induced hole of a problem. I had to go over there and hangg around for about 3 hours and, hey presto, a new passport. They were helpful

My one recently, they said "Our records show that someone in your family had a minor accident recently". My response "Minor accident? MINOR ACCIDENT?? You sick bas***d, he's still in a coma!".
There was a few seconds silence before they hung up.
My colleague prefers to say "Why are you calling me? I don't drive, I'm only 15!" Apparently calling 'minors' is even more frowned upon.

In the dim and distant past when I married my wife we both had to go to the passport office to 'discuss' her potential residency. At one point they took me into a private area and had a very serious conversation about how this was my "very last chance not to get scammed etc etc". That was over 25 years ago, as you say, playing the long game. She's sneaky too, pays UK tax and everything...just to lure us into a false sense of security. ^_^

I recently had to go to a town hall in Antwerp with a friend who was trying to renew his passport - now that was a palaver!

[Up until recently, local town halls in Belgium kept blank passports and they just stuck in your photo and details. When a senior mujahedeen got assassinated in Afghanistan by some Tunisians travelling on stolen Belgian passports, it was concluded this might not be such a good idea]

It's incredible to think that people fall for this kind of thing, much like the Nigerian prince wanting to transfer millions of money to you.
