BTW, did you guys not have school formal dances, until you got this American import? That's just sad![]()

Nope not at my school. We did have discos down the Bank Hall Miners Club which invariably ended in fighting, kissing or puking depending on which group of alcoholic ability and looks you belonged to.If we can call a concert a "prom" for historical reasons, then they can call a dance a "prom" for historical reasons.

We had an end of year disco for the 4th, 5th & 6th form, in the assembly hall and another in the gym for the 1st - 3rd form. The school paid for Pegasus Mobile Disco to come (did half the dances in Norfolk) and the parents collected us at 9pm. I remember cans of pop, soggy sausage rolls and most people in jeans. Lots of sitting around the outside of the dance floor. If we can call a concert a "prom" for historical reasons, then they can call a dance a "prom" for historical reasons.

The teachers would be the bouncers and would intervene if the snogging in the corners was getting a bit out of hand.

(wasn't a fan of chintz, excluding the chair behind me)
So was I, and they hadn't yet imported them from the USA anyway. When I was a kid, we were too poor to have proms.
I didn't. That sort of thing was not common practice back in the 80s in a crappy Havering comprehensive
