Cash on collection isn't without its risks (you do hear of people being robbed), so best to try to build a rapport with the buyer/seller if possible. I've bought a second hand bike off here via BACS, and sold through eBay (COD and PayPal) and gumtree (cash)
I've also bought secondhand phones through AV forums who have a well developed selling network and feedback system.
There's always a potential risk buying anything second hand or indeed online, but you can mitigate that risk
The only time I've been scammed was an eBay item, never turned up, PayPal didn't want to know. Luckily it was under £15 and now I avoid PayPal if at all possible. And generally only use a credit card online, rarely debit (except for holidays through reputable companies to avoid fees)
