Just purchased:

Shimano Zee Shadow - FreeRide - rear derailleur- short cage - 10 speed

8 speed 11-34t rear cogs

single narrow-wide race face 32t - drive

Sram pc-870 8 speed chain - literally brand new in box still

can i run that rear 10 speed derailleur on 8 speed cog and 8 shimano shifter?

could i use the limit screws to set max and min height so it doesnt over pull etc when shifting to the largest cog on the cassette.

trying to do a 1x8 setup with clutch

if not ill just buy the Shimano Zee 10 speed shifter and a new cog and chain.
also dont know how to do taht chain wrap calculation thing.. me and math are NOT friends. feel free to figure that one out and let a brother know

You've got a real mish mash of parts there!
If it's a short cage RD it won't work with 34t cassette. The chain won't work with any, only eight speed components.
What speed is the X1 drive specified for?
If you want an 8 speed set up you can use your chain and cassette, a compatible 1x chainwheel and a long cage eight speed RD.

Chain length is easy, no mathematics required, big cog front to big cog rear (NOT through the derailleur) plus two links and a quick link.

NB: You won't get much of a range of gears with a 1x drive and 11-34 cassette. You'll spin out very quickly in top gear.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

sorry its a mish mash of parts.
post links to parts for a 1x8 or a 1x10 setup> HTML LINKS TO PARTS

ill stat the parts again:.. its on my DH "downhill" bike

BRAND NEW UN-OPENED BOX - Shimano Zee Shadow - freeride model - short cage - 10 speed rear derailleur - states it can run 11-34t 10 speed cassettes on the short cage free ride model
https://www.bikedoctor.ca/product/shimano-zee-shadow-rear-derailleur-180613-1.htm

8 speed cassette 11-34t - currently on hub
https://www.sram.com/en/sram/models/cs-pg-850-a1

Sram pc-870 8 speed chain - literally brand new in box still
https://www.bikedoctor.ca/product/sram-pc-870-8-speed-chain-42209-1.htm

RACEFACE SINGLE CHAIN RING - narrow-wide race face 32t - drive 104 bcd.
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ca/en/race-face-narrow-wide-mtb-single-chainring/rp-prod109723

IF this will not work together i can replace some parts.
example::

i want to use the the short cage RD with clutch, it states its for 10 speed cassettes: Should i buy the 10 speed shimano cassette - https://www.cyclesmith.ca/product/shimano-deore-10-speed-cassette-358733-1.htm AND a 10 speed chain https://www.cyclesmith.ca/product/shimano-deore-10-speed-chain-181216-1.htm as well as the Shimano zee 10- speed shifter https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/component/zee-m640/SL-M640.html

OR BUY THIS REAR DERAILLEUR https://boxcomponents.com/products/box-four-rear-derailleurs-8-speed
already bought the other one, do online stores do returns for online purchaes? bought from a biek shop

WILL THE ABOVE SETUP WORK TOGETHER? i also purchased a new BONTRAGER SHIFT CABLE AND HOUSING KIT -WHITE

Okay so you can use the Zee as it sates for 34t cassettes. The single chain ring is 9/10/11 speed compatible so that’s okay, so you can use that 10 speed cassette. The problem being you’ll then need a new rear wheel to accommodate it.
Maybe better to go eight speed with the alternative RD, but then then you’ll need to look for another chain ring. You’ll need to choose the size very carefully as I said you could spin out in top gear. 1x set up are designed to be used with Max teeth larger than 34t, usually around 42t. They are also made for 10/11 speed AFAIK.

Nothing is simple like it used to be as there is so much choice now and unfortunately you have become a victim of that.
When you are trying to upgrade an older bike you are bound to run into problems. I don’t know exactly what you hope to accomplish or what advantage you’ll get by going to x1 10 speed drive but it’s going to be expensive. I think a better plan would be to sell the bike and get one with that configuration or one that can be more easily converted or fitted as OE. I Sorry but I think that’s your best option.
I see you’ve already fitted the single front drive. That’s about as far as you can reasonably take it.

1X on a 32 chainring does seem a bit limited, but then i don't really ride offroad MTB so maybe OK. Most MTB seems to be about freewheeling downhills anyway. I run 1x 10spd on a gravel bike cum winter road bike 38 and 11-34, which works fine. 38-34 gets you up anything on the road and a fighting chance of all but the steepest or muddies off road, and you can do a decent lick before spinning out 38-11.

the clutch derailleurs and modern 1X chain ring will probably only play nicely with a 10sp chain I imagine. You also need to work out if your hub can fit a 10 spd cassette on it - possibly will with no spacer?

I still think the whole thing will be more practical on a 3X8 setup.
