As Ian says, never go back in there again, or if you do tell him he is talking BS.

SPD are fine, and shimano even do adaptors for SPD now on flat soled shoes.

I use Shimano A600 "ROAD" SPD pedals

And i use them on road bikes, as do many others.

FWIW SH56 cleats are multi release, and are way easier to clip in and out than SPD SL, Look etc.

I have had spd and spd sl on the same bike and it made no difference what so ever.

Spd's are often better for stop start commutes as they are usually double sided where as spd sl are not.

The pedals and shoes (you linked to) you have are 100% ok for you and your bike.
There is no need to change/spend any more money on different pedals and shoes.

They are SPD pedals? Either keep single sided or I think you can remove the resin platform and you are left with M520s basically
