Should I go microwave free and buy an air fryer?

Yes, the only good reason for having a combination oven is if you are short on space, and just don't have room for multiple appliances.

The saying "Jack of all trades, master of none" is just as applicable to devices as it is to people.

I disagree, we have a Panasonic combi microwave, fan oven and grill and it is very competent at all 3. The only limitation is the size of pot or tin that will fit in it but it's fine for us. Using the fan oven I do pies and lasagne regularly, also casseroles and roast birds. Just not massive turkeys etc. Cheese on toast is spot on using the grill. Better than the regular grill as it turns the food so grills more evenly.
We also have a double conventional oven which I've not used for years as the combi does it all so well.

I always used to use a proper chip pan

but I didn;t really change the oil as often as I should

and my wife has a very sensitive sense of smell

so it annoyed her as she could smell the fat whenever it was used

I got a new one which fixed it for a while - but even changing the oil ever few cooks the bits that stuck to the side above the oil line still smelt too much for her

so we started on the air fryer route
still have to clean them - especially the area above the fans - but not as often and she doesn;t get the smell as much

BTW - anyone know if any have a fan and element that can be easily detached so you can clean above them?

I can do ours to some extent but it is a real faff and requires a toothbrush heated and bent in the rigth place to get to some bits!

It has a 1 year guarantee with Lidl and after 1 year it has to be returned to the manufacturer if it malfunctions within the 2nd year. I have 30 days to try it and see if I like it. if not I can return it for a refund to Lidl within 30 days.

Usually Aldi gives you a 3 year warranty on electricals, even basic bike lights.

Have fun. Just done steak in one side of ours and roasted potato slices in the other half. The veg went in the steamer pans.

You can't really replace one with the other, at a stretch you can poach an egg in a microwave, but don't try cooking frozen chips in one.

I have an egg boiler and poacher, but I can or could fry eggs in my microwave. You have to be very careful with the yolk though! It's best to put a fork in it 30 seconds into microwaving the egg on number 5 or 6, to hope it stops it exploding. You can pop the yolk before any microwave heating takes place to stop the yolk exploding, but then you don't have a runny yolk to dip your bread into.😉

PS....Always cover the dish or plate the egg's on with a saucer or better still a plastic microwave plate/dish cover to stop any explosions from splattering your microwave with egg shrapnel!😁

Do piss or get off the pot

You need both, the simplest, cheapest available.

This from a man who numbers the sheets on loo rolls

My thoughts are that by buying an air fryer, not another microwave means that if my old microwave isn't broken and I've pressed a button that has made it seem broken but isn't, then it can be rectified. If I'd bought just another microwave then I'd still have to bin my old one as obviously I don't need two. I'm quite looking forward to experimenting with this air fryer as I've never used one before, whereas another microwave is er, just another microwave. It'll certainly be a novelty trying browned, crispy food instead of 'sloppy' food from my old microwave. I do fancy trying fried bread, fried in olive oil, not animal fat stuff, but I only have wholemeal seeded bread which isn't really what you'd use for fried bread, but it's all at the experimental stage at the moment.🤔

I try to avoid coating things in any oil as it quickly gunges the base up. Sometimes you need to eg a food i enjoy is eg a tin of Aldi baby boiled spuds.....pat them dry, coat in oil and brow in the A F but best avoided if poss.
Bacon is a cinch. Lie it on foil and 200° for 4 minutes (turning part way through).....no oil needed.
