Family Hols in a week and a half, off to southern Turkey (Feithya or something spelt a bit like that). Cost a small fortune for a family of four, booked direct, no tour operator

Should I cancel and swallow the loss of a trip (and the cash) or is there any more risk here than any western visited resort

If it was me I'd cancel. There's no way I'd take a risk with my family

Hi

If you cancel you will lose all you money from the holiday as you said, however how will you family feel about not having an holiday?

Turkey is a big country, are you going near the attacks?

Really you shouldn't allow these people to dicate your plans, I'm not sure we are save anywhere. The next attack is supposedly going to be Spain.

If your family are really frightened and don't want to go then you have your answer.

Fehtiye is a great place, do not miss the market day and make sure you catch the boat taxi over to Calis

If you go to the blue lagoon at Oli Deniz turn right and follow the road up beside the entrance and sit in one of the beach bars, far better and nicer that the crowded area.

Use the Dolmus as much as possible for getting around, and most of all stop worrying and enjoy it.

The FCO travel advice is here https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/turkey
As it says 2.5 million of us visit the place each year without incident.
To me, it seems a bit like someone from Turkey, wondering whether they should cancel their trip to the Lake District after the 7/7 attacks in London.
If it was me, I wouldn't hesitate to go, but it's your call.
PS. If you are going to Fethiye, it looks brilliant.

Forgot to mention the Turtles in the harbour, so many great memories. Brilliant genuine knock off stuff to bring back as well, my Rolex lasted years.

My Wife and I were not worried, just mindful. We agreed that, since we have a car, we shall visit less "popular" beaches and the like (for fear of a Tunisian style attack.... just typing that sounds so disrespectful...I'm sorry).

Then this morning things notched up another level.

The kids have no clue and would be devastated if we cancelled until we told them why, which would probably scare them from ever travelling so we would likely make up an excuse and have to deal with their disappointment/blame for some time to come.

I appreciate, as others say, that the risk is most likely the same as being in London or any major city but then i don't take my entire family into London for a fortnight. I have been looking at the Govnt website all day and the risk of kidnapping seems more apparent then direct actions.

Oh and we are in a small apartment complex, mostly privately owned, with a hotel attached. I actually felt this a little safer than a big complex as it would be as attractive a target,

What crazy times we live in, I cant believe that we need to make these types of considerations to just have a week or two away from work!

waiting for the kids to go to bed and shall have a proper chat together and decide.

We are in the same boat as you - family holiday to Turkey, independently booked about a couple of hours further east than Fethiye. I've got to be honest, we haven't thought about cancelling for one second.

Fethiye is a beautiful town and has a great market. I can highly recommend a trip to Saklikent Gorge. Turkey is a fantastic country and if you decide to go I hope you have a wonderful time.
