Your (lack of) punctuation doesn't indicate who said it. Was it flexible metal, Nasa - or Mars missions? Or the bike tyre? And what was made of flexible metal? Word order makes it seem likely it was the Mars missions ...

Ae there particular requirements for a tyre on Mars? Gravitational force. Atmospheric pressure. Noone there to pump up pneumatic tyres. Suspension needs of vehicle/payload?
