I don't think Hearn had any intention of moving the championships from Sheffield, he's not stupid and he knows how important having an iconic venue is to the game. it was a clever ploy to force the Council into upgrading the theater.
It makes sense all round, Sheffield Council isn't actually putting in the bulk of the money and its was overdue a revamp, and the capacity goes up, so more visitors, more revenue, more spending in the city.
It will be interesting to see where it goes in the hiatus year - maybe a bumper one for fans at the Sheffield Arena?
quite clearly by my "it just becomes increasingly harder to avoid it on Eurosport/TNT this time of year", I literally booked a hotel to visit Sheffield this time of year a few years back once, and couldnt work out why they were so damn expensive, thats how clued in to snooker I am.
