Try 'eating' car pollution, that being meant to kill 5,000 in the UK per year.

One thing that makes the number of KSIs (downs) look bad to all who frequent this website is that we see EVERY one that occurs in the UK, and some elsewhere.

The good part of this is that it makes all of us keenly aware of the need for action to change UK driver behaviour, improve road design, and of the need for us to both ride defensively and act properly when we're doing the driving.

The bad part is that it can give us the idea that cycling's dangerous when it isn't. Certainly cycling involves an element of risk, but that is small. If you're the one that's downed that doesn't help, neither does it help that the risk travelling on a scheduled flight or on a passenger ship is at the negligible level, if you're one of those on the plane or ship that goes down. That's the difference between zero and negligible.

The article linked by srw is excellent. Keeping perspective is vital, or we'd all stay at home (with the risks associated with that!)

It makes me depressed too @RRSODL, specially when fatalities happen in my area or somebody on here crashes.
Not stopping cycling but, just being extra alert.

You must be doing something seriously wrong to never fall off. Never learning comes to mind.

I just took a scenic detour across Cassop Moor to Old Cassop only to fine then find the A181 like a motorway.
I managed to do a gentle somersault on a bit of too steep soft grassy alternative bridleway direct to Shadforth.
Maybe a short 1/2 mile left to Running Waters was the better A181 avoidance option.

I'm not head over heels in love with that quick gambit choice I made.

Yebbut, it's not falling off but being knocked off that is the problem.

Approximately 120 cyclists killed each year (RIP all those souls), but thousands are injured more than a few suffer serious injury with life changing consequences. All because we are riding along minding our own business and some numptee drives into or over us. Game over.
