I first heard this on Capital Radio the day after I dumped a long term love out of the blue. I can still see her face as she looked back at me while she walked away, devastated.

An wonderful song

Have you heard Dwight Yoakhams 'take' on it?

She had left him lost and broken
Like no other had before
And now his heart was just a token
Of the pain it had endured
And his memories were clouded
With all the hurtful things she'd said
Yes, for all intent and purpose
He might just as well been dead

[Chorus:]
And some people claim they still hear him call her name
Hey, hey, Maureen, swear they hear it just that plain
Deep in the night and sometimes right at dawn
See, his body died some years ago
But around here Mr. Johnson's love lives on

He seemed far away and distant
With that cold and silent stare
Never moving, never speaking
And just barely breathing air

No one really knew her reason
And who can judge her right or wrong
The only true and solemn fact is,
The man we'd known was all but gone

[Chorus:]
And some people claim they still hear him call her name
Hey, hey, Maureen, swear they hear it just that plain
Deep in the night and sometimes right at dawn
See, his body died some years ago
But around here Mr. Johnson's love lives on

Sissy Thompson said she'd seen him
Late that night on Shelby Road
About a mile from there they found him
It seems he'd died out in the snow

I hear'd the preacher at the service
Say from love he's finally free
But I say love, it knows no season
It haunts the soul eternally

[Chorus:]
And some people claim they still hear him call her name
Hey, hey, Maureen, swear they hear it just that plain
Deep in the night and sometimes right at dawn
Yeah, his body died some years ago
But around here Mr. Johnson's love lives on

Yes, his body died some years ago
But around here Mr. Johnson's love lives on...

Wife & I saw them live, back in 2003, when they were touring to promote the 'Home' CD, at Manchester
(It was the day before they slagged off George Bush, over the Gulf War

The audience was quiet throughout it, & then totally hushed, at the 'Folks, Would You Bow Your Heads For A List Of The Local Vietnam Dead' line
Even now, so many years later, I get a chill at that line, whenever I hear the song

As An Aside; hoping to pick up their new CD later this week:okay:

Bombers Moon
Mike Harding
Particularly, when you know it was partially wrote in tribute to his father

Shivers, as I write this, listening to it, on YouTube😪😪

'44 in Bomber County
Young men waiting for the night,
In the hedgerows birds are singing,
Singing in the falling light. ~
And the captain says,
'Tonight there'll be a bomber's moon,
We'll be there and back underneath a bomber's moon.
A thousand bombers over the northern sea
Heading out, out for Germany.'

Chalky White stands at the dartboard,
Curly Thompson writes to his wife,
Nobby Clarke and Jumbo Johnson
Are playing cards and smoking pipes;
And over the hangers rises a bomber's moon,
Full and clear rising, as the engines croon
And the planes they taxi out on to runway five
And sail off out into the silvery night.

Sandy Campbell checks his oil gauge,
The Belgian coast is coming soon;
Curly Thompson lifts his sextant,
Lines up on a bomber's moon
And waves are shining there beneath the bomber's moon.
The Lancasters flying high beneath the bomber's moon
Coming in along the Belgian coast
A thousand silver-shrouded ghosts.

Flak flies up around the ci
ty,
Jumbo Johnson banks the plane,
Goes in low and drops his payload,
Turns to join the pack again.
And people are dying there beneath the bomber's moon,
The city's a raging hell beneath the bomber's moon,
And the planes head out towards the northern sea:
Young men coming home from victory.
Over Belgium came the fighters,
Flying high against the night;
Curly Thompson saw them coming,
Closing in before he died.
And the young men shot them down beneath the bomber's moon,
Shot them down in flames beneath the bomber's moon;
Young men sending young men to their gr
aves
Saw them down into the North Sea waves.

Now it's '84 in Bomber County
Mrs White dusts the picture and she cries:
Chalky White in uniform
Looking as he did the day he died.
And for God's sake no more bomber's moons,
No more young men going out to die too soon,
Old men sending young men out to die,
Young men dying for a politician's lies.

For God's sake no more bomber's moons,
No more young men going out to die too soon,
Old men sending young men out to kill.
If we don't stop them then they never will.

No more no more bombers’ moons
No more no more bomber's moons.

Equally 'Christmas 1914' has the same effect on me

So evocative, particularly with that film

And you know the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.

Up the street beside that red neon light,
That's where I met my baby on one hot summer night.
He was the tender and I ordered a beer,
It's been forty years and I'm still sitting here
But you know the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.

It's here I had my babies and I had my first kiss.
I've walked down Main Street in the cold morning mist.
Over there is where I bought my first car.
It turned over once but then it never went far.

And I can see the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye

But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight.

I buried my Mama and I buried my Pa.
They sleep up the street beside that pretty brick wall.
I bring them flowers about every day,
but I just gotta cry when I think what they'd say.

If they could see how the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye,
But hold on to your lover,
'Cause your heart's bound to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to our town, to our town.
Can't you see the sun's settin' down on our town, on our town,
Goodnight
.

Now I sit on the porch and watch the lightning-bugs fly.
But I can't see too good, I got tears in my eyes.
I'm leaving tomorrow but I don't wanna go.
I love you, my town, you'll always live in my soul.

But I can see the sun's settin' fast,
And just like they say, nothing good ever lasts.
Well, go on, I gotta kiss you goodbye,
But I'll hold to my lover,
'Cause my heart's 'bout to die.
Go on now and say goodbye to my town, to my town.
I can see the sun has gone down on my town, on my town,
Goodnight.
Goodnight.
