To my untrained eye, they appear to be another solution to a problem that does not exist in the real world

Seems like a genuine problem and I too have looked for a solution

. Mostly want to use cleats and hence special shoes, occasionally want to cycle in normal shoes. Half and half pedals are always wrong way up, and are substandard for cleated riding. I'd also want toe clips if not using cleats too.

Changing pedals each time is a bit of a bore

Has anyone used these? Are they any good? Are there any other types I should be looking at?

I didn't fancy using an adapter so I fitted these and they're great.

They generally sit with the cleat entry uppermost but it's a simple action to turn them over as you ride off.

If you are going to mess around with allen keys to fit platforms then why not just fit a set of flats when needed?

Although not my type of thing I like the ones Glasgow cyclist has listed above
