Sprucing up my cranks

Now that I'm set on having my frame powdercoated I know that the cranks are somewhat untidy. General dirt and lack of cleaning means they are distinctly scruffy.
Dirt seems mainly surface but is well set and ingrained.

How do I clean these up? Can I get some sort of polishing wheel to fit on my deWalt hand drill? Interweb is full of info but not about cleaning cranks.

I don't want to take off any lacquer if that can be avoided, and I don't really want a mirror smooth finish. I just want to clean years of grime off.

Solvol Autosol by hand seems a very hard way of doing things.

Any suggestions?

id be tempted to use a felt pad. I have a dremel sized tool fitting for polishing plated watch cases, i use a bit of polish with it. It gets most scratches out. Just go easy if you attempt that route...
