Stealing your own bike, sort of...

Came out of the house for today's utility ride. Prepped bike, loaded bottles. Went and got changed. Went to set off. Bike still locked to railings (it lives outside under a cover).
Failed completely to find key. Defeat Oxford cable lock in 15 minutes with cheap pair of Toolzone large sidecutters I use for removing plugs from to-be-recycled electricals. Feel both aggrieved and happy at same time.

15 minutes is longer than I'd expect a cable lock to last so not all bad

Had to do that at a city farm I worked at once. Fortunately we have mahoosive bolt croppers used for cutting fences and errant farm machinery.

The local kids were fascinated.

They normally turn up shortly after you've chopped the lock.

I fully expected the keys to be found immediately I'd removed the lock, but they've still not surfaced, so...

Of course, thirty seconds later it was found on the floor next to the bike.

The trouble with working with kids is that you can't quite express your feelings adequately in such situations...

A good idea but unfortunately my garden was 20km away at the time. The Mahoosive bold croppers were nearer to hand.

I had to get a bike from the shed of a relative who had died. It had 3 locks but only 2 keys. Took me about 30 seconds with a hacksaw to cut the errant one.
