And round our way, leave it open if you find it open. Except I always wonder if it's the farmer who's left it open on purpose or whether some dullard has just not been arsed to close it.
I was taught to leave it as found, for much the same reason but always wonder if someone couldn't be bothered closing it.

That is the problem

I saw an article on one of those daytime TV programmes talking to farmers and saying that these are the rules

and they were constantly assuming that everything MUST be right when you find it
the possibility that something was set wrong by someone else didn;t seem to occur to them

One of the things on it was a farmer who has sheep
he was saying that sometimes they need a gate closed (edited !!) to stop the sheep going through it
and sometimes they leave the gates open because they want the sheep to be able to graze in both fields

but completely missed that point that the previous walker might have done it wrong

Maybe it's just me, but if I was the farmer and wanted to leave the gate open OR closed, I'd lock it in that position with a padlock, thus communicating the intended gate position to all and sundry! :okay:

I have seen some do that - just a bit of rope tying it to the fence seems to do

but I have certainly seen some that only open to 90 degrees - so nothing to tie it do

mind you - if it was a constant problem then investing in a few cheap signs saying "leave this gate open" would work pretty well

Lefty tighty. Get it righty.
You know, it's never crossed my mind that leaving an open gate open is something I should do. And now I think about it, I almost never go through gates when out walking. It's nearly always styles or kissing gates. And on the odd occasion that I do go through a gate, I can't recall one being open unless it was tied back and secured and I didn't notice it.

I'm not going to go to any effort to close a gate that's been secured open, even if it's just secured with a bit of bailer twine, I'd leave it as it is. But if a gate was just swinging and not latched, and if it had a latch or bolt then I'd probably latch it shut. (but now I'm not so sure)
