I was taught to leave it as found, for much the same reason but always wonder if someone couldn't be bothered closing it.And round our way, leave it open if you find it open. Except I always wonder if it's the farmer who's left it open on purpose or whether some dullard has just not been arsed to close it.

What? Is this some kind of sheep double bluff.a farmer who has sheep
he was saying that sometimes they need a gate open to stop the sheep going through it

Sheep thinks "ah, he's left that gate open. He must want me to go through it. So I won't." Farmer takes advantage of this stubbornness by confining the sheep with open gates.
That is the problem
I saw an article on one of those daytime TV programmes talking to farmers and saying that these are the rules
and they were constantly assuming that everything MUST be right when you find it
the possibility that something was set wrong by someone else didn;t seem to occur to them
One of the things on it was a farmer who has sheep
he was saying that sometimes they need a gate closed (edited !!) to stop the sheep going through it
and sometimes they leave the gates open because they want the sheep to be able to graze in both fields
but completely missed that point that the previous walker might have done it wrong

Maybe it's just me, but if I was the farmer and wanted to leave the gate open OR closed, I'd lock it in that position with a padlock, thus communicating the intended gate position to all and sundry!![]()
