What? Is this some kind of sheep double bluff.

Sheep thinks "ah, he's left that gate open. He must want me to go through it. So I won't." Farmer takes advantage of this stubbornness by confining the sheep with open gates.

Sheep will try getting through the same hole at the side of the gate as when they were a small lamb. Then more follow where one has gone, despite the open gate.

Their success rate at this is higher than you might think.
