It could possibly be dodgy. But Strava AI is getting better at detecting dodgy efforts labelled as normal bike rides.

Some riders who aren't pro riders can do nuts efforts.

And the more often you do segments, the more you will find your quickest times are on days with a strong tailwind, not necessarily your best power effort.

There's a ~250 metre ramp around the corner from me, averages 9% and briefly hits ~13%. A converted mountain bike rider with a strong sprint and 1min power smashed it in 52secs back in '19, big effort with a perfect tailwind. He was ~75Kg back then, in his late 30s, now under 70Kg.

Strava Ai can’t even count ! The below is from my walk of today….

**End of all Strava credence 🤣🤣

I downloaded Strava the other day. I just get the free stuff at the minute, I doubt i'll take full advantage of the full package because i'm a tight arse, lol.

But anyway, I went on a ride earlier and on the little map it said I was the third best in the world at climbing this particular little hill near where I live. Praise indeed, lol.

I delved into the detail of this small climb and it's about 0.5 km long and pretty steep. I wasn't really trying as I wasn't aware at the time that strava was timing me! Anyway I did it in just shy of 2 mins and it said I was doing about 13kph.

The thing is, I checked the time of the guy who was fastest, from 2015 I think it was, and he did it in something like 45 seconds and it said he was doing 34 kph!!

Now I don't know much about Strava but it dawned on me that it is wide open to, let's say, unscrupulous efforts!

What's to stop some dude doing segments which are popular with runners or cyclists, riding on a motorbike or in a car? If this has dawned on me, a complete newby to Strava, then I'm sure it's registered with loads of other Strava users too?

There is nothing to stop people using e bikes, motorbikes, cars. I have used strava with my motorbike, but i have used the settings so only I can see the results. My results do not appear anywhere else. Some people forget or do not know how to do that.

You can hide results, add manual activities, break a segment record on an e-bike etc etc…….hell I’ve even heard of ‘Pro Athletes’ “advertising” a service where they log on and do an activity under your name: for a fee……

The possibilities outside the norm if you’re that way inclined are many 🙄

Personally I would ignore anyting strava, I get three different distances for same route into work. A few times when network has been funny its told me my fastest speed going downhill is 75mph I am a fat unfit 49 year old chances of that happening without me heading to grave afterwards very slim unlike my build.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
The extra bells and whistles from the paid for version is nice but unless your really into your stats its just nice to have , they do have route making too but nothing that other apps cannot do.
I subbed for years but just downgraded to free as i dont use it enough to make it worthwhile to pay for stuff i dont need.

Agreed. My ride info has always come from a very basic bike computer, so this "upgrade" to the basic free Strava package is quite space age to me, lol.

I like the little map where it highlights how you've done compared to other cyclists on certain segments of the journey. The option is always there for you to try and better yourself.

But then it dawned on me about the opportunity to falsify ride info. Breaking your balls against a rider who'd really done the segment in a Ferrari is a tad unfair, lol.

Wait until you hear about Veloviewer

There are lots of variants that have an effect

A short time ago I was 5th fastest on a segment near me

thing is - firstly it is an ebike - which doesn;t actually matter as it is a legal ebike and I was over th 15.5 mph motor cutoff all the way

AND - there was a bloomin gale force tail wind behind me all the way!

I deliberately keep my rides private so they don;t get put against "proper" bikes
and they are always logged as ebike ride

but they still appear on the leaderboard along with other bike rides

so - as said before - you have no idea of why the other people are faster or slower than you

it does check but the checking is difficult

I have heard of several pro riders (TdF types) laughing about how their rides were deleted as being suspicious
but how else can they tell

BTW - that segment that I was 5th on - the leader was doing well over 30 mph and there is a road next to the cycle path
but on a clear cycle path - some people would be able to do 30 on a "proper bike"
so who knows??

just enjoy your ride and use the segments to judge yourself and no-one else

I use the free version. My Wahoo bolt links to it and I can see if I ridden anything faster than usual. Also my cycling club put up the forth coming club rides on it and you can say if you are attending and also down load the route to your computer.

not exactlly what was asked but just a point about Strava

I use it with the Beacon facility - whenever I go for a ride - or walk - it sends a text to my wife with a link
which she can use to see where I am and where I have been

so if teh grandkids (and her son!) come round then she can see whether it is worth me turning round

and - if I fail to return - she knows where to send an ambulance!!!!!!

which we find useful

(NOTE - some people might have "reasons" for their wife to know know where they are !!!)
