Strava has just launched some new features from its acquisition of 'The Breakaway' app. One of them is 'Power Skills' which gives a chart of your best power levels from 15secs to 60 minutes and breaks them into three segments; sprint, attack and climb and ascribes a level to each one (you only get this if you have power meter data). I am at level 8 which is 'world class' for all three (it doesn't say how many levels there are). Whilst I will gladly take the ego boost, I suspect I am not actually world class 😂

Yet more wonderful services and facilities and advantages that Strava has that I cannot see me ever wanting!!

I don't know what I've done but it would seem Strava has taken on itself to give me the 30 day free trial for the premium service! However, i don't intend to subscribe once the 30 days are up!

I must say though, I do like that little map thing that gives you a "play" option. And then it takes you on a flyover view of your journey, much like they do on tele when giving the details of a particular stage. Very fancy!

However, I can't help thinking that (for me) all this ride info on offer from Strava and this Veloviewer thing, and god knows how many others, is nice to look at, but it's all pretty useless to me really.

At the end of my 30 day foray into Strava I'll probably just go back to the basic info on my cycling computer. An old technophobe such as myself doesn't really need more tech.

Enjoy the trial, opening up all the premium features!

Some of the premium Strava sub features are decent, like the route planner, but I wouldn't pay £54.99 for a 12-month sub for them! They used to offer subs that focussed on specific areas, back before long covid I'd sub to the "analysis" pack for extra training data for ~£20 a year.

Possibly already mentioned in thread, but other cycling sites I find useful...
https://intervals.icu/ (donate-ware, lots of useful detail for me, like LTHR and power data info)
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/home (currently free, their route planner is decent alternative to the Strava one)

Both can be paired to your Strava account.

I would use something else

except for the thing that allows you to send a message to a "friend" who can then follow you and see where you are

which my wife likes and it allows her to be able to see where I am if her son appears with the grand kids
and if I died she will know where to send the ambulance!!

To me, Strava's main benefit is the social aspect. I have a few friends (yes, really) who post rides and stuff and it's a way of keeping in contact, sending kudos is a way of saying "I'm still alive".

That said, I don't generally upload my own rides to Strava except big challenge ones (friends-only visibility) just as a way of reminding people that I exist.

I use ridewithgps as a ride log. I've forgotten why I chose it over Strava years ago, but I'm happy with it.

I cancelled my subscription at the beginning of the year (annual subscription) the day after it ran out (June/July time) they offered me 25% (I think) discount to renew, which I was happy with.I'll do the same again next year.

The only premium feature I really use is the route planner, which I use a lot. I did try Garmins planner but I didn't get on with it.

I downloaded Strava the other day. I just get the free stuff at the minute, I doubt i'll take full advantage of the full package because i'm a tight arse, lol.

But anyway, I went on a ride earlier and on the little map it said I was the third best in the world at climbing this particular little hill near where I live. Praise indeed, lol.

I delved into the detail of this small climb and it's about 0.5 km long and pretty steep. I wasn't really trying as I wasn't aware at the time that strava was timing me! Anyway I did it in just shy of 2 mins and it said I was doing about 13kph.

The thing is, I checked the time of the guy who was fastest, from 2015 I think it was, and he did it in something like 45 seconds and it said he was doing 34 kph!!

Now I don't know much about Strava but it dawned on me that it is wide open to, let's say, unscrupulous efforts!

What's to stop some dude doing segments which are popular with runners or cyclists, riding on a motorbike or in a car? If this has dawned on me, a complete newby to Strava, then I'm sure it's registered with loads of other Strava users too?

The Tour De France & Tour De Yorkshire made topping a segment impossible around here, bl*%dy pro's

I forgot to mention that I'd happily consider doing a "family sub" with three others for ~£100, so ~£25 each because it's limited to four users iirc.
