Tales from today's commute....

Well yesterday's cycle commute was pretty grim. Light rain for the morning part, heavy rain and strong winds for most of the working day. Thankfully the wind and rain abating just a little for the ride home. It still wasn't very nice out there.
I'n contrast to today of which blue skies and sun is predicted for all day.
Perfect for the full ride home this afternoon.

Same period last year, 44 rainy commutes.

Last night was damp but not terrible.
It's been a good year really - averaging about 150-200 miles a month. I haven't tracked the rain, but it didn't feel so wet as sometimes. Only 1 minor accident and no bike failings - can't even remember a P occurrence.

Signing off for the year, chapeau to everyone I've passed/been passed by, keep riding its so much more fun than driving!

WFH today, and avoided any bike commutes this week. Traffic was rubbish and trains rammed. No wonder I cycle.

Windy but dry this morning can't complain. Only off on the 24th 25th and boxing day so the show must go on.

Dry this morning at least, ribs under the chest muscle aching this morning so bailed on the club rides over the weekend.

Absolutely biblical , i got soaked to the skin even with the full kit on and hit the deck after riding through a big puddle that must have some mud in that had washed off the verge so i suddenly lost control even though i was in a straight line and landed hard on my left shoulder .Covered in mud which thankfully had washed off by the time i got home .
Couple of co-codamol to numb the pain and a hot shower !

Not nice. Hopefully you weren't riding too fast. Sometimes it's just the shock of coming off that gets you.

From experience, I get up off the deck slowly, just in case I've broken any bones. Then just take a few moments to check yourself (and the bike) over before setting off again.

A nice and quiet commute into work this morning. It's that weird dead period where a lot of commuters and drivers seem to take the whole Christmas week off. So the train and the roads were less busy then usual. Train company took me by surprise this morning. Deciding to use older, less comfy rolling stock.
Yesterdays incessant rain stopped over night leaving a stunning sunrise this morning, though it was still very wet on the roads. Looking like the rain in the SE has cleared off until late next week thankfully.

Last commute of the year was yesterday for me as today im going in the car as my manflu is still lingering so that green snot rockets are a distinct possibility and as im on late shift the chance of meeting sozzled drivers etc is a high as i even saw a pedestrian weaving about last night on the way home .

last commute today for 2025. At ht e traffic lights this am and a cyclist on his race bike and Rapha'd-up went past me and the 2 cars ahead then as the lights changed he moved in front of the cars to get to the l/h side of the road. Surely just wait with/behind me? Anyway I caught him up and passed him. Next set of lights he ignored the red light and continued into Mcr.
A couple of days ago at these lights a boy cycling to school went thro on red and turned left. the police van waiting in front of me immediately put the lights/siren on and went after him and had words.

Being a bloke I commenced my Christmas Shopping at around 0930hrs 24/12.

By 11am id completed the lions share needing only to collect a Parcel from Next in town and acquire a metre of Jaffacakes,
At about 1150hrs I set of intending to call into town enroute to work at 1pm.
I got about 3/4 of a mile down the road I cycle down about 1000 times a year and nicked what would be an exaggeration to call a pothole - its more a small patch of surface stripping. Unfortunately that was the moment that the likely slight under inflation of tyres, size of imperfections, angle of strike and speed conspired to cause a snake bite.

Return home for tube change and abandonment of shopping! On the upside I made work in time for a free shower before work.

I THINK that was my first commuting puncture this year!

Okay this was yesterday, but as it was a sunny but very cold day, went out for a Crimbo ride around a reasonably deserted city. Quite a few folk out for a walk, but still pleasing with virtually no shops open.
Cycling down one of our main shopping streets, was amazed to see a Starbucks open - ! Stopped to check it wasn't an illusion and was accosted near the door by one of the staff who told me that for today, all food & drink was free - !
Not having bothered with a lock for my Brommy. issue solved with half a minute's metal origami and took it inside.
Whilst in there, one of the managers joined me and we had a good banter of about fifteen minutes or so and as I was about to leave, they insisted I help myself to any of the perishable foodstuff I wanted - !
One roll, one panini melt & a mince pie later, I departed.
Didn't see that coming - !
